Properties of metal ions
- Metal ions with a high affinity for sulphur are considered to inhibit the formation of VSC in the oral cavity.
- Zinc was first examined in the 1970s regarding oral malodour reduction and is one of the most studied active ingredients for the prevention of oral malodour (Raven 1996).
- Zinc is now the most widely used metal for this purpose because it has a low toxicity and is not cumulative (Quirynen et al. 2002b, Rölla et al. 2002).
